Leaving Blockchain

Hello everyone!

First and foremost, we hope any of you dealing with the aftermath of hurricane Fiona or Ian are safe and okay. Really from any disaster that might be going on in your area. We had a little rumble with Ian, but thankfully, we are fine. Secondly, we want to thank everyone for following us on our journey so far. You have no idea how much you mean to us. Even if we are often quiet and later with updates than we would like to be. That’s life, though, especially as a small team of 2 people.

I would like to preface the rest of this with the fact that we are not quitting, so you can stop panicking. However, what we are doing may lose us a lot of your support, and we completely understand if that is the case, but I would like to ask that you just read this in its entirety.

Geekxboy and I have given everything a lot of thought, and as of today, we have terminated our adopter contract with Enjin and will no longer be working toward blockchain integration. This does not mean that we aren’t going to do amazing things. We will work towards releasing Doctor Necrosis on Steam and other platforms. We will still be going through with the Founders Token; only it will not be an NFT. Instead, we will be selling it as a Kickstarter tier where you will get the same things we have already promised with it and probably more. The phenomenal artist we paid to do the artwork for all of our pets will be turned into steam trading cards at some point in the future.

There will be no hard feelings for the people that leave because they were only here for the potential blockchain aspect; we wish you all the best in all your future endeavors. For those of you that do stay, we are excited to turn the page and start this new chapter of Doctor Necrosis with you. Honestly, this has already lifted a bit of weight off our shoulders, making game creation more enjoyable.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask; the fastest way to reach us is through our discord.

Stay safe out there, Doctors, and I will make sure to bring you something shiny when I return.

July 2022 Development Update

What have we been working on?

This past month, the team at Doctor Necrosis has been busy finalizing the core game loop, which includes diagnosing patients, creating cures, administering those cures, and performing checkups on your patients. At this stage, all citizens in the town of Foxglove Cove can get sick, which can affect their schedules and cause them to close down their shops until they feel better. Make sure you’re stocked up on essentials in case your shops need to close down. We are still working on the final stages of checking up on your patients but expect to have that completed by the end of August.

During the next month, we are going to be adding the rest of our in-game items, adding items to the various shops around Foxglove Cove, adding harvestable items around the town, and adding the rest of the essential building interiors.

This has been that stage our small team has been working toward for the past couple of years. While it has taken a long time for us to get to this point, it’s an exciting stage for our team of 2 people: one is the researcher and writer, and the other is our developer and game asset artist. We truly appreciate everyone’s patience during this journey and can’t wait for our next announcement. Those who follow our social media pages will have seen increased activity there. Those of you that do not follow us are missing out on the meet and greet of the townspeople. So make sure to follow us on social media and join our Discord server for our next exciting announcement.

June 2022 Development Update

What have we been working on?

The team at Doctor Necrosis has been hard at work the past few months getting the game closer to a public release. This includes adding more building, revising game mechanics, squashing bugs, adding to the game’s lore, adding more items, adding more NPCs, and new ways to prepare ingredients for your cures.

Not all components can just be tossed haphazardly into the brewing station. Some ingredients require preparation first, and for that, we have added the crafting station. This new station allows you to convert materials into ingredients used for brewing.

Every citizen in the game now has a particular schedule every day for where they will be and what they will be doing, but these schedules can be disturbed if they get sick. Any sick NPCs will now stay home until they have recovered or until you have provided them with a cure for their illness. Sick NPCs aren’t able to work, which makes their shop unavailable until they feel better. Make sure to prepare ahead of time in case this happens. If you don’t manage to cure them in time, that’s when our newest NPC makes himself known to the world of Doctor Necrosis. The Elder is an older plague doctor that’s been practicing medicine for longer than you’ve been alive. He is contacted and asked to come into town to save the day, making sure you know that you’ve made a mistake and he had to clean up the mess.

March 2022 Development Update

What have we been working on?

The last few months have been hectic for the team at Doctor Necrosis, and it’s been a couple of months since our last dev blog update (More information about this is on our Discord). Over the past few months, we have continued doing internal testing, revising core game systems, and adding new features and NPCs for the initial release.

This month we revised our game saving system to be more compact and future proof as the game progresses; this includes some helpful additions like saving your player’s location within the world. Our initial plan was to respawn you at your laboratory, but we knew this would be abused as a fast travel system. The new design now saves your location by which area or building in the world you are in, in the world.

We have also added crafting and research tables to the Doctor’s laboratory. Every item in the game now must be researched before it can be used in our crafting system so you can better plan which conditions each ingredient helps with since most ingredients help alleviate multiple ailments. All ingredients can be found in the Doctor’s journal, and if they need more research or what ailments they help alleviate or cure.

On top of new and upgraded game mechanics, we have been hard at work adding new NPCs to Foxglove Cove and getting our existing ones ready for launch by writing chat lines, introductions, making sprite modifications, and giving each one their own unique personality. If you missed any of their debuts you can find them on our social media!

November 2021 Development Update

What have we been working on?

The past couple of months have been busy for the Doctor Necrosis team. Since our last development update, we have been moving closer and closer to an alpha release. This past month, we have been doing internal testing, revising core game systems, improving the game’s backend server, and adding new features that would be useful for the initial release. Now that the alpha release is on the horizon, we are excited to announce that we will be opening up sales for the Doctor Necrosis Founder’s token that we discussed in the previous development update blog. We will be selling a limited amount of founder’s tokens to the public, and giving a bunch away on our social media platforms. We will release more information about the sale on our Discord server and then our social media accounts.

September 2021 Development Update

What have we been working on?

The past couple of months have been busy for the Doctor Necrosis team. In our last update, we reviewed the prototype for the crafting system, which has now been finalized after we had to overhaul the inventory system to allow for customized items. The old inventory system couldn’t store the custom potions, so we rebuilt that to be more streamlined and allow for future expansion. Once we finished the new inventory storage system, we were able to complete and test the crafting system that will be in the alpha release for Doctor Necrosis. The crafting system will change as time goes on to add new item preparation steps and make the crafting system more complex and unlock more in-game items.

What’s Next?

We will be releasing updates throughout the entire development process and posting gameplay videos whenever possible as we lead up to our demo release.

July 2021 Development Update

What have we been working on?

Last month we showcased all the new building interiors for you to explore and showcased the new weather system, which will significantly impact the townspeople’s health, your ability to collect and grow resources, and which shops will be opened or closed on stormy days.

This month we worked on the (hopefully) final iteration of the disease generation system, that will work alongside the quest generation system. This system is still following the possible disease aliment chart we outlined in December 2020. Along with the disease generation system we have a working prototype for our crafting system to create cures for any diseases you may come across in the game. Crafting the cures won’t be straight forward as the crafting system in most games. For Doctor Necrosis, you will need to do your research to find out which supplies cure which ailments and craft a corresponding concoction. After your research is complete, you will need to find out where to harvest, purchase, or forage for supplies. Some supplies can be more complicated than others to find, requiring you to conduct more research to figure out alternatives; if they exist.

June 2021 Development Update

What have we been working on?

Last month we reviewed our old inventory system that went through a complete revamp and now includes equipment slots. We also showed off our market user interfaces that you would see when you visit any of the shops around town. This was just a much needed system update to integrate more complex crafting systems later on. We spent a lot of time on this, so it was modular and would allow for faster development as the game development progresses.

This month, we continued working on building interiors to make each unique to the townsperson who lives/works there. Every building will be enterable once we hit alpha for the game, and every building will be unique, and some will even include a hidden secret while staying as historically accurate as possible. We have completed 18 out of the 27 main buildings (we say main because there will be random townspeople that also have homes). Here are some of the buildings we have been working on this month:

This month, we also started working on our weather system, which will significantly impact the townspeople’s health, your ability to collect and grow resources, and which shops will be opened or closed on stormy days.

What’s Next?

We will continue building out the quest and disease generation and building out the citizens, so we have at least 30 main story citizens and additional background NPCs that will have mini-quests. Adding all of these citizens includes creating schedules, generating quests, crafting storylines, and writing dialog for each one.

We will be releasing updates throughout the entire development process and posting gameplay videos whenever possible as we lead up to our demo release.

May 2021 Development Update

What have we been working on?

Last month was a hectic month for us, and our lives got a little turbulent, and when it rains, it pours. Because of this, we didn’t get a development update out, which just isn’t like us. We went into a little more detail about this on our Discord server, as well as some sneak peeks of work in progress (If you aren’t a member, what are you even doing?). So this month, we pulled ourselves up by our bootstraps (mask straps?) and got back to work.

As we discussed previously, initially, we weren’t going to have any interiors done for the initial beta release, but since we pushed back our release date, we have started working on interiors of buildings to make each one unique to the townsperson who lives/works there (Our favorite so far in Regi from the Junk Drawer but don’t tell the other townspeople that)

Regi is a little messy, but one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

If you’ve been following us for a little while, you might remember the old inventory system, which was rather boring. We have started on a total revamp for the inventory system, which plays nicely with the new market system as well, so you can buy and sell goods with various shopkeepers. Included in the new inventory system is something we talked about a while ago, which is equipment slots for upgrading the aromatic items in your mask and choosing new weapons for fighting off monsters during your epic adventures.

The new market system will allow you to buy and sell items with all the shopkeepers in the game. The market UI will enable you to see your current inventory alongside the market inventory so you can see what you already have available to you and choose the quantity of items you want to buy or sell. Shopkeepers do have a limited amount of items every week, while some shop’s items will vary from day to day. Shops are divided into the High and Low Markets. The High Market sells pure resources and ingredients but for a higher cost, which can be challenging to obtain at the beginning. If you find a component you need but can’t afford, you can risk possibly buying the next day at the Low Market, but at what cost? Buying at the Low Market can be a risk because resources may be damaged, rotten, or no longer available.

March 2021 Development Update

What have we been working on?

Last month we gave some insight into our plans for pets and shared our real life pets that keep Doctor Necrosis running. We also revised our newly added citizens by revamping their sprites, animations, and AI to make them a little more unique.

This month we are taking more steps to our demo release. We refined our AI systems for citizens, creatures, and pets, and we believe it will work well for all future NPCs and other entities we add in the future. We have begun work on building interiors so buildings will be enterable like the tavern, shops, and the NPC’s homes. We were going to leave this feature out of the demo, but we felt it would make the game less immersive, so we plan to make it ready for the demo release. We also made a completely custom game launcher with a game updater so you can always make sure you have the most up to date version of the game. The game launcher includes account information, news about the game’s development, and a game launch screen.

As always, we have continued working on our “medical” research to ensure we are as accurate as possible when it comes to in-game items used for crafting, brewing, or just consuming. This includes acquiring new historically relevant medical books and journals to ensure our game is accurate.

Now comes the news we did not want to have to announce. With all these new additions, reworks of mechanics, and new mechanics recommended to us, we must push back the launch of the demo version of the game to make sure everything works as it should. We are doing this to add new features to the game after launch instead of rushing development to add basic mechanics. Once we have worked out a release date, it will be a guaranteed release date. We also want to set the benchmark of expectation for our future games based on our first.

We like to be completely honest and transparent from the get-go, as most of you have learned over on our discord server just by talking to us. Unfortunately, sometimes we set unrealistic goals for ourselves, and we do not always realize it until it is a little too late. We are a two-person team, and I am a one-person developer and this being my first project, I have come to understand my original goals just were not realistic. So for that, we do apologize; we are learning, and we promise to do better in the future! We will always keep you updated every step of the way because without you there is no us.
